Manchester United Secure Matheus Cunha in £62.5m Deal from Wolves

Manchester United is poised to complete the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers after meeting his £62.5 million release clause. The agreement, finalized after Wolves rejected United’s initial proposal to pay the fee over five years, will see the amount settled in three installments over two years.

United initially proposed a five-year payment plan for the 26-year-old striker, but Wolves insisted on the terms outlined in Cunha’s contract, three installments over two years. After negotiations, United agreed to these terms, paving the way for personal discussions and a medical examination.

Since joining Wolves from Atlético Madrid in January 2023, initially on loan before a £43 million permanent move, Cunha has been a standout performer. In the 2024–25 Premier League season, he made 33 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing 6 assists. His contributions were pivotal in helping Wolves avoid relegation, earning him the club’s Player of the Season.

Cunha’s acquisition marks the beginning of a significant squad overhaul under United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim. Following a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League and missing out on Champions League qualification, the club is keen to revamp its attacking options. Cunha’s arrival is expected to inject fresh energy into United’s frontline as they aim to bounce back in the upcoming season.

Cunha has requested the iconic number 10 shirt at United, a number currently associated with Marcus Rashford, whose future at the club remains uncertain. Additionally, United are considering selling Alejandro Garnacho if they receive a £60 million offer and are also looking to offload Antony, who spent the latter part of the season on loan at Real Betis.
